Virgin Media fibre rollout boost for London
Superfast internet provider Virgin Media has announced an ambitious set of plans to deliver a significant boost to high-speed broadband access for homes and businesses across London in the coming years.
The company is to invest £3 billion into network development across the Greater London area, with the firm intent on delivering download speeds of up to 152 Mbps to locations currently not covered by superfast broadband services.
Virgin Media Chief Executive Tom Mockridge told the Evening Standard that there are several pockets of the capital that remain in the broadband slow lane and therefore steps are now being taken to rectify this situation.
"We are going to ask people to sign up online and if enough people do it in a particular street we will go and cable that street," he stated.
Overall, the significant investment will aim to increase the company's broadband reach from its present tally of around 13 million properties to at least 17 million in the years ahead.
