Wandsworth council blocks to gain fibre broadband access

Friday, June 13th 2014 by Editorial
Fibre broadband will be coming to Wandsworth Council's housing blocks.

Residents of the housing blocks operated by Wandsworth Council are set to gain access to high-speed fibre optic broadband thanks to a new deal between the authority and a network provider.

The council has teamed up with Community Fibre to deliver the superfast technology to all properties it owns in the area, along with a free 'walled garden' internet service.

Through this, residents will be able to access the council's website, BBC News and the government's online services in order to help those living in the blocks to look for jobs and find out other up-to-date information.

New cabling will be installed to all homes in the blocks, meaning people will be able to enjoy free television channels and a digital radio service too.

It is hoped the extensive rollout will be completed by August 2016.

The council's Housing Spokesman Councillor Paul Ellis commented: "Through this innovative deal, we plan to provide free access to a useful collection of websites.

"It means everyone living in our blocks will be able to take advantage of the opportunities and services available online."
