Connecting Devon and Somerset to extend fibre broadband rollout

Friday, July 4th 2014 by Editorial
Fibre broadband is coming to an additional 25 communities in Devon and Somerset.

It has been announced that the Connecting Devon and Somerset rollout project is to extend its delivery of superfast fibre optic broadband to a further 25 communities, bringing the high-speed technology to more homes and businesses.

These areas will include North Petherton, Nether Stowey, Chilton Trinity, Chudleigh, Dowlish Wake, North Tawton, Tedburn St Mary, Whitestone and Spaxton, to name just a few.

They will join a number of other communities across the two counties that can already access the high-speed technology, taking the total number of connected locations under the rollout to 56.

In addition to bringing fibre broadband to these new areas, the service's delivery will be extended around towns including Barnstaple, Newton Abbot, Totnes and Bideford, while a further 17 communities could be set to gain access to the superfast infrastructure by October this year.

During July 2014, it is expected an additional 75 green roadside cabinets will be upgraded to fibre, meaning local residents and firms based in their vicinity can enjoy faster internet loading speeds and the opportunity to use multiple online devices at one time.

Since the extensive regional rollout project began last year, approximately 980 km of fibre optic cables have been laid to bring better broadband to premises in Devon and Somerset.
