Digital Durham announces next stage of fibre broadband rollout

Fibre broadband is coming to more homes and businesses in the Durham area.

The Digital Durham rollout programme has announced it will be delivering fibre optic broadband to an additional 12,000 residential and commercial buildings throughout the county.

To begin with, people based in Sedgefield and Trimdon will gain access to the high-speed technology via network provider BT for the first time, while the superfast service will be extended throughout further parts of Stanley, Burnopfield, Lanchester, Crook, New Brancepeth, Beamish and Meadowfield, among others.

In addition to connecting homes and businesses to better internet, Digital Durham - which has had £25 million invested in it - is anticipating the creation of more jobs in the county thanks to its broadband rollout, potentially providing a boost to the local economy.

Durham County Council's Cabinet Member for Corporate Services Jane Brown commented: "We are extremely pleased with the progress of Digital Durham and it's great to see the second phase already getting underway."

To deliver the superfast fibre technology to residents and companies in the north-east, the regional rollout initiative will oversee the installation of a number of new green roadside cabinets, as well as the laying of hundreds of kilometres of cable.
