Isle of Wight residents continue to be connected to new superfast broadband services.

More than 12,000 homes and businesses across the Isle of Wight are now benefiting from improved broadband speeds as a result of the ongoing actions of a local initiative.

On the Wight reports new fibre cabinets continue to be set live across the island all the time, with funding for the delivery of enhanced online services being provided by the ongoing Broadband Delivery UK programme.

Having now reached this significant number of connections for the Isle of Wight, network operator BT has set the target of achieving 20,000 connections by the end of the year.

Bill Murphy, managing director of next generation access for BT, told the news provider: "Working in partnership with councils such as the Isle of Wight, we have been able to reach into the heart of hundreds of communities that have so far been beyond the reach of this vital technology."

He added that this latest milestone marks the "great progress" that continues to be made towards helping every property on the island have access to the best possible data connections.
