iNorthumberland fibre broadband project launches new website

A new website has been launched to offer more information on the iNorthumberland project.

The iNorthumberland fibre optic broadband project has launched a new website to offer residents more localised information before the rollout gets underway next year.

Led by the county council, the scheme is preparing to appoint a communications firm as preferred provider in the new year and is set to bring better broadband to every home and business in the area by 2020.

A sequential programme of work will be carried out to bring all of Northumberland up to speed, as some communities - such as Cramlington and Morpeth - can already access faster speeds, while others will be upgraded over the coming years.

Stephen Gray, programme director for iNorthumberland, said there has been a lack of information to share with people up until now.

However, this is set to change from next spring when a commercial partner is appointed and the council gains a much clearer view of the project, he stressed.

Community engagement officer for iNorthumberland John Cooper added: "Once we have appointed a partner early next year, we will be sharing information on when the services will be coming to different telephone exchanges."
