Norfolk and Suffolk MPs unite to demand fibre broadband
Fibre optic broadband is vital to stimulate the economy and create new jobs in Norfolk and Suffolk, local MPs have insisted.
Keith Simpson, who represents the Broadland constituency, told the Eastern Daily Press the technology is "absolutely crucial" for the community - particularly if it hopes to attract small businesses to the area.
"Having high-speed broadband is not some form of luxury," he remarked. "It is just an everyday means of communication."
His words were echoed by North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb, who said the county is at risk of being separated by a digital divide between urban and rural areas unless infrastructure improvements can be carried out.
"We need to punch above our weight and make sure the investment comes to Norfolk," he added.
Earlier this year, BT announced it will bring its fibre optic broadband service to two Norfolk towns - Dereham and Sheringham - as well as the Suffolk community of Newmarket.
The work is set to be finished by spring 2012.
