Point Topic says GPON will dominate fibre broadband market
GPON technology is set to dominate the fibre optic broadband market over the coming years, according to Point Topic.
Chief executive of the telecoms analyst Oliver Johnson claimed the innovation, which offers improvements in bandwidth and efficiency over BPON propositions, is "winning the debate" for future fibre broadband deployments.
"Its economic advantages, particularly at the moment, are a powerful argument and mean that it's likely to be the dominant technology for the next few years at least," he remarked.
However, GPON could be set to face increased competition, as Point Topic noted several new innovations to deliver super-fast broadband speeds are currently making their way to market.
As a result, it is becoming more and more important for suppliers to adopt broadband deployment methods that prove cost effective, the organisation stated.
Point Topic's publication came shortly after the EU announced plans to invest at least €7 billion (£6.1 billion) in fibre optic broadband rollouts over the coming years.
