Study shows growth in fibre broadband market share
Fibre optic broadband connections have seen their share of the global broadband market increase in the second quarter of 2011, according to new research.
The Broadband Forum's latest study showed that the sector is still dominated by DSL lines, which account for 52.65 per cent of all net additions in the 12 months to June 30th.
However, fibre broadband deployments were found to be growing "rapidly", with particular increases seen in hybrid fibre and DSL access solutions, which now account for just under 15 per cent of the total market.
Despite this rise, the Broadband Forum claimed the surge in availability is not happening fast enough to satisfy market demand.
"Service providers are pushing for more passive optic network product interoperability, to help drive out testing overhead and stimulate more competitive pricing for fibre products," the organisation commented.
Figures published by the group in June revealed that the global subscriber base for fibre optic broadband connections rose by more than a fifth over the preceding year.
